A man sitting at the piano with his arms crossed.Stephen has been teaching privately since 1989, instructing interested, committed students of all skill levels in music theory, concepts in improvisation, repertoire, fundamental knowledge of transcription and analysis, transposition, as well as piano techniques and ear training. Stephen is an applied music instructor at Deerfield Academy. He also currently teaches at Amherst College and the Northampton Community Music Center. Stephen is also the former Jazz Band Director at the Williston Northampton School.

Stephen completed his jazz studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Privately, He cultivated his sound by dissecting and analyzing the greats who influenced him – Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Bud Powell, Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson among others- deconstructing, assimilating and creating his own dynamic sound.

He tailors lessons to the student’s goals, skill level and learning style while instilling discipline and love for the craft. He draws his inspiration from his teachers, jazz luminaries, Billy Taylor, Yusef Lateef, Andy LaVerne and Kenny Werner. Most notably Stephen studied with renowned music educator Charlie Banacos until his passing in 2009.

Stephen’s studio is equipped with both grand and upright pianos as well as an electric keyboard. Please come equipped with a love of music and a desire to learn. Lessons are also available online via Zoom or Facetime.
